About the Mythsinger Legacy Project

The Mythsinger Legacy Project

The Mythsinger Legacy Project (MLP) continues Daniel Deardorff’s work of restoring the wisdom of myth to culture and community. In 2019, when Deardorff “flew out of this story and into the next,” he left a trove of unpublished writings, three albums worth of music, and many live hearthside recordings of his mythtelling and other teachings. In early 2022, MLP began hosting Mythsinger Community StoryNight events online, welcoming an international community of all ages and cultures. We now gather regularly around the virtual storyfire hearth to hear one of the 10,000 year old stories from one of the finest mythtellers of the 21st century. In November 2022, Inner Traditions published the expanded 3rd ed. of Deardorff's classic book The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture and Psyche. Judith-Kate Friedman, MLP steward and Daniel's life partner, represents the book and has been giving live and online book talks with music across the US and beyond. View a selection of live streams and podcasts here.

In honor of Daniel Deardorff’s work and his long service as a board member, Songwriting Works Educational Foundation (501c3 charitable organization) adopted the Mythsinger Legacy Project under its fiscal sponsorship. Learn more about collaborations between MLP and Songwriting Works here.

In his last days, surrounded by family, dearest friends, and dedicated ICU staff, Daniel turned to us with gusto and commanded that we “Keep the song going!”

When asked what song he meant, he said: “The song I’m in!” So it is now up to us.

Thank you for joining the Mythsinger Legacy Project community as we keep Daniel’s song: his music, teachings, and the stories going for our own and future generations.
